Open Position as software engineer

The Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), a research structure of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), is starting an informal, non binding procedure for the recruitment of a software engineer, with duty location in Breña Baja, Island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain.

With this notice, people with adequate knowledge and qualification are invited to send their expression of interest for the position. The appointment, after a trial period, can be considered for a fixed contract with the Fundación Galileo Galilei Fundación Canaria (FGG). Also INAF personnel can be assigned for this position.

The duties of software engineer concern software development for astronomical instrumentation under the Head of Information Technology.

A valid candidate should have:

  1. a university degree in Information Technology or equivalent with solid and proven knowledge in IT, communications, system administration and software development.
  2. experience with object-oriented analysis and design; programming in c++/java linux environment is essential. Experience in some of the following areas is desirable: CORBA, RMI.
    Knowledge in scripting languages such as perl, python is a plus.
  3. excellent knowledge of English and Spanish, both written and spoken. Knowledge of Italian is considered a plus.
  4. physical health compatibility with the work at the telescope.
  5. driving license.
  6. excellent interpersonal and relation skills to work as a part of a team and autonomously.

Other duties include the support to the administration of linux and windows servers, as well as workstations and laptop computers. He/she should ensure the support as users' helpdesk. The software engineer will work within the Information Technology Division of TNG.
