TNG together with a group of students celebrate the week of Astronomy

The TNG celebrated the Week of Astronomy hosting a group of students from the italian Liceo Cecioni high school of Livorno (Italy).

The students visited the MAGIC, WHT, GTC and TNG telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos observatory. They also had the possibility to be astronomers for a couple of hours at the TNG during the April 20 night. Supervised by the telescope staff they carried out broad band filtered imaging of NGC 4214 irregular galaxy, as well as long slit spectroscopy of the Supernova ASASSN-15fz.

Hours later with the help of the TNG staff the students had a data reduction session. During the session they created a true color image of NGC 4214 using the imaging data in various filters. Also, the ASASSN-15fz spectrum was extracted and calibrated via standard star and calibration frames obtained in the same night. The students learned about redshift correction of the spectra as well as analysed the P-Cyg profile in the SN spectrum.
