Modern studies of astronomical sites for large telescopes

Speaker: Sergio Ortolani (Dip.di Astronomica Univ. di Padova)

Date and time: 2011-06-22 11:30

The world wide search for new astronomical sites started several decades ago, but recently the emphasis on an accurate search given to the highly sophisticated new telescopes and observing techniques required more sophisticated analysis. At the same time the efficiency of this study dramatically increased making use of new satellite and ground based database and new data analysis, allowing an almost complete word wide coverage search. We will present in particular the results of recent studies started at ESO with the search for the site of OWL and later of ELT. Developments based on innovative techniques will be discussed.
