Young Astronomers at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo: II Edition

Concorso Giovani Astronomi II Edizione

Following the great success of the first edition of the "Young Astronomers and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo" competition, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) is proud to announce the second edition.

The competition ‘Young Astronomers at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo: II Edition’ is open to students (15-17 years old) attending Italian high schools with the aim of promoting their skills in science and technology, offering them new opportunities for comparison, growth and achievement in science and its applications. Furthermore, it promotes the ability to work as a team, with the purpose of exploring and appreciating the wonders of the Universe.

To participate, students have to prepare an observational proposal including photometric or spectroscopic observations to be carried out during an internship at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (La Palma, Canary Islands). Students will experience to live as a young astronomer spending some nights at the bigger Italian telescope. They will also have the opportunity to visit the other optical and Cherenkov telescopes at the Observatory of the Roque de Los Muchachos under the guidance of resident astronomers.

The time spent preparing the competition can be recognized as PCTO (Alternanza Scuola Lavoro), through specific agreements stipulated with SAIt (Societa’ Astronomica Italiana) and TNG.

To make it easier for students and teachers to choose an astronomical topic and the subsequent preparation of the observational proposal, TNG and INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) will organize a series of webinars given by INAF astronomers.
